Man faces charges for reading wife's e-mail

Post by Guest on Mon Dec 27, 2010 5:49 pm

Found THIS article this morning.

The question is, do spouses have the right to privacy from eachother?

I think if there isn't anything to hide then spouses shouldn't get all worked up about the other seeing what is in the phone, computer, email, ect. My husband uses my computer where all my passwords are saved to all account, he uses my phone all the time and I don't have a problem because I have nothing to hide. He is the same way with his things. Now, I am not going to look into his email, phone and computer looking for stuff every chance I get. People do have the right to privacy but when they are married their life and well as electronic life should be an open book to the partner.

In a case like this where he suspects her of an affair- reading her email is way cheaper than hiring a private detective kwim? However I think anyone person is entitled to their privacy married or not, as different couples have different views on it. For me personally, my husband and I know all of each others passwords etc but I draw the line at email/facebook sharing. I never understand it as often my friends are different than my husband's.

In this case though if its a shared computer and he had access with her password and stuff than I don't think he should be prosecuted and I'm wondering who brought the charges and why? Will be interesting to see if there's anymore on it.

I really hope that gets overturned. It's just ridiculous.

I dont think it should be a law... tough if I found out Tim was hacking into my email I would be pissed, I would not sue him but we would have a fight haha

I am huge on having my own things/ space and if thats taken from me I'm not a happy camper.
And I think thats a respect thing not a lawful issue

I think everyone is allowed to their own privacy married or not. However, I dont think that this man should be prosecuted for doing what he did. My husband knows my passwords but he doesnt sit there and stalk my computer, phone, e-mail etc. And vice versa I have his information but I am not going to sit there and go on his things either. There has to be some boundaries with privacy etc...but thats my view on it.

Everyone needs privacy, married or not. However, prosecution is going too far.

wow, really..prosecution? thats pretty extreme, especially considering they're married. matt and i know each others passwords and such, that doesnt mean we snoop around each others stuff. thats pretty ridiculous.

There was a piece about this on the Today show today. The guy is claiming that he knew his wife was talking to her ex husband because his number showed up on their phone bill and that he had concerns about violence towards the kids because of a history of domestic violence with the ex. He says that he checked her email to confirm so that he could ensure safety for the kids. The lawyer on the Today Show says that if this is true, he might not be charged with anything.

I think in cases where there is a concern about safety of someone, a spouse might have a reason to look at something like that. Otherwise though, I think privacy should be kept. Yes, I know Dan's passwords and he knows mine, but I would NEVER look at his email or anything without asking because I feel that would be a huge breach of trust. If you can't trust your spouse and you feel like you need to spy on them, you probably shouldn't be married to them.
