Irresponsible Parents?

Post by marisa on Thu Jun 10, 2010 4:32 pm

Abby Sunderland is a 16 year old girl who attempted to become the youngest person to sail around the world solo without stopping. Her hope of not stopping ended in April when she had to stop to make repairs to her boat. However, she set off to finish her trip after the repairs were made.

Now, she is lost at sea. She set off emergency beacons early this morning but has made no contact since.

My question is, was it irresponsible of her parents to allow her to do something so dangerous all alone? Even though this was a big dream, should her parents have said no?

I don't think they're irresponsible. They know their daughter and her capabilities. They also prepared her as well as they could for this trip. She showed that she truly wanted this and worked hard for it. The current situation is unfortunate but not caused by anyone. It's just a risk that everyone took.

I know that she worked hard to get there and that they tried to prepare her as best they could, but I just keep thinking about how the brains of teens just aren't capable of some of the quick processing and judgment of adult brains. That is the big reason why teens have high rates of car accidents. This girl has had problem after problem on her trip. I just think that as a parent you also have to step in sometimes and say, "Hey, that might be too dangerous for you to do right now" and hold off for a few years.

That is tough and I dont know if I could let my 16yr old do it. Maybe once they are older and out of the house(not that I could stop them). I know it wouldnt be any better but they would be adults.

I guess it depends on the 16 year old...
I'm kinda with Dallas on this, but you have to know your kid and there ability and if then you think its okay then why not...
There is always a risk at any age

I would also think it would have restrictions on them. Most of the time an adult has to be with the minor just for a doctors appointment. Its hard to get things when you are a minor.

I think it depends on the teenager as well.
